The SASOL National Winter Swimming Championships started 50 years ago and is still sponsored by SASOL.  This is the only national winter event in the country and started off as an open championship and later age groups were incorporated to where it is today.

This is a very popular event as there is attractive price money to be won for the swimmers in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and even for the team and coach for their efforts.

To go back in the history of this event, it is wonderful to see that Terrance Parkin won his first swimming medal as a ten year old at the SASOL Winter Champs.  Even Charlene Wittstock, who is now princess of Monaco, took part in this event for years. Ryk Neethling's 10 year old record at the Winter Champs is still standing!  All this makes this event a very special one.

In 2003 the Swimming Pool was renamed to the “Penny Heyns Swimming Pool” at which occasion Penny Heyns herself re-opened the pool.

Despite the severe cold of the Northern Free State, this event is still growing and each year swimmers from our neighbouring countries participate and add some spice and joy to this event.

We are very proud to be associated with a company like SASOL and to work in conjunction with them and the Metsimaholo Municipality.

This event has grown to be one of the six major events on the swimming calendar in South Africa.
